Historic victory for Mayo in Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues

The sun was certainly shining for Mayo’s second outing in this year’s Littlewoods Ireland Camogie Leagues match against Kildare at Adrian Freeman Memorial Park in Tooreen.

Having gained valuable experience from their round 1 meeting with Roscommon the previous week, Mayo were determined to bring the same level of intensity to this tie and that they certainly did.

The opening minutes of the game saw Mayo confidently cut through the Kildare defence creating a number of scoring chances. After a few early wides, Mayo settled in to the game with their first score coming from a Meabh Delaney free after 5 minutes. In a superb display of free taking the midfielder went on to score 7 points from placed balls.

Mayo dominated possession throughout the first half and this was reflected on the scoreboard. At half time Mayo led 0.9 to Kildare 0.2.

At the start of the second half, a number of positional switches saw Kildare attempt to get back in to this tie. A new found energy saw them threaten the Mayo goal but goalkeeper Aoibheann Crawley was on hand to avert any danger. A Kildare point followed and at this stage it looked as if a Lilywhite revival might be on the cards.

A goal from Mayo’s Aoife Lilly on 37 minutes, swung momentum back in their favour. At this stage, an historic victory for the home side never seemed in any doubt. Mayo recorded a further 5 points while holding Kildare to just one score, resulting in a famous victory.

Mayo will be very pleased with their performance and this result. Defensively, they worked very hard to contain a strong Kildare forward line. Mayo’s midfield pairing covered a lot of ground, ensuring a plentiful supply of ball in to a forward line who caused all kinds of trouble for their opposite numbers. The inclusion of 6 Mayo substitutes in the second half who more than held their own will have provided valuable Inter County Adult experience to more panel members.

Final score was Mayo 1:14 to Kildare 0:04.

Mayo: Aoibheann Crawley, Roisin Cassidy, Amy Mulkeen, Grainne Delaney, Shauna Golden, Aoife Doherty, Mairead Charlton, Meabh Delaney (0.7), Aine Charlton, Emily Kelly, Erin Murray (0.2), Orna Hession (0.3), Aoife Lilly (1.0), Lisa Scahill (0.1), Ciara Delaney

Substitutes: Hannah Tener, Niamh Kennedy (0.1), Lauren McLoughlin, Megan Deely, Kate Scahill, Shauna Peoples.

If you missed the match you can watch it back to see Mayo’s historic victory!
