Tesco All-Ireland Minor C Camogie Championship Final

Mayo met a very strong Wicklow team today in Tang GAA, Co Westmeath to contest the Minor C Championship Final.

From the outset of the first half Wicklow set their intentions and scored a goal in the opening minute.

By the 26th minute they had all their scoring done for the first half and clocked up 3 goals and 4 points.

Both Saoirse Delaney and Fionnuala McLaughlin both worked the ball up the field with solo runs only to meet with a very tight Wicklow defensive line on most occasions.

Despite the scoreline the Mayo backline worked tirelessly to keep out many Wicklow attempts on goal. Megan O’Malley caught some great balls out of the air and cleared them out of the danger zone. Both Caragh Burke and Ruby Lambert were kept busy also clearing away balls from Roisin Lynskey’s goal – their work rate was phenomenal as the Wicklow attacks kept coming.

Fionnuala McLaughlin got Mayo’s only point of the first half on the board in the 29th minute.

Given the amount of time Wicklow spent in the Mayo half of the pitch in the first half the second half was a very different story.

While Wicklow did score a goal in the 2nd minute, that was their only score of the second half.

Niamh Mooney along with Geri-Maye Henry kept the ball moving into the Mayo forwards, who didn’t get a lot of time on the ball in the first half.

Both Ellen Tener and Captain Emer Delaney saw a lot more time on the ball and worked hard to realise any opportunity that came their way.

Aine Regan & Lilian Keane in the forward lines also were trying valiantly to keep the ball in the Wicklow half and maximise all chances.

Niamh Mooney got the next Mayo point just after 38 minutes and also scored 2 more points, with Fionnuala McLaughlin rounding off Mayo’s score with another point.

Eimear Geraghty, Molly Tunney and Laoise Greally worked hard when introduced in the second half as substitutes.

All told a brave effort by our Mayo minors today – great work rate all round the pitch. Wicklow were tough and skilled opposition and were worthy winners. But our players both on the pitch and on the panel have lots to be proud of and their day will come.
