Nancy Murray Cup: Donegal v Mayo Match Report

After a successful run in the League earlier this year, the Mayo Camogie Junior team made the journey to Buncrana to play Donegal in Round 1 of the Nancy Murray Cup.

In sweltering conditions, Mayo produced a strong performance getting themselves off to the perfect start in this campaign.

A blistering opening for Mayo left them 2.4 to 1.0 up at the first water break. Mayo very much dominated possession in the first half and this was certainly reflected on the scoreboard. At half time, Mayo led 4.13 to 1.1. A clear sign that Mayo were fully intent of securing victory despite the intense heat and journey in excess of 3 hours.

To their credit, Donegal worked extremely hard but they were no match for the visitors and the signs were ominous from early on. The green and red were relentless in the second half and continued to work tirelessly.

Overall, Mayo will be pleased with their opening round result. Defensively, they were solid and in control from start to finish. Mayo’s midfield pairing covered a lot of ground, ensuring a plentiful supply of ball in to a forward line who caused all kinds of trouble for their opposite numbers.

Despite what seemed like a very one sided affair, a spirited Donegal side brought the best out of Mayo.

There’s no doubt, there will be areas where Mayo will want to improve before their Round 2 fixture against last years Nancy Murray Cup finalists Tyrone on Saturday 31st July in Tooreen.

Final Score : Mayo 7.27  Donegal 1.1
